I am the Bluebird shut in the cage
My wings are not broken my wings are not clipped
The door is not locked the door is just shut
I spend my days watching in silence
Watching the other birds so strong and so free
I creep towards the door and open it up
The light is so blinding so foreign so new
I stumble far back to the edge of my cage
And the door is quickly snapped shut again
Discouraged I sit watching the other birds
And all of their fun
Wishing that could be me just once
Another Bluebird enters my vision
He circles and prods at my rather large cage
He stops and he hovers
Looking at me in a curious way
“Why?” he asks after a second or two
“Why do you remain in the cage that way?
The door is not locked the door is just shut
Your wings are not broken your wings are not clipped
So answer me this: Why do you remain in your cage that way?”
“Because” I say “The door is too heavy to open it up
And the outside is cold and windy and dark”
“I’ve seen you open the door before
You did it just a minute ago
I know you know how”
I let out a huff
He had ruffled my feathers
In a literal way
“Want to be friends?” he tweets all happy
“You wish to be friends with someone like me
A bird in a cage refusing to leave?”
“You’re right” he says moving farther away
“I’ll be friends with you if you come out and play
Take as long as you want
Take as long as you need
I’ll come back every day to help you a tad”
I agree to his little bargain
Day by day and night by night
The light slowly turns into pleasant warmth
And I open the door more and more
I am free now to spread my wings
But I tumble to the ground and hop to my feet
The Bluebird joins me on the ground
“It’s okay” he says “We can just walk for now”
I had to write this for my poetry class, but I had to stop before the two Bluebirds started talking, because it was supposed to be a realitic poem. I also had to chage many parts of it, but I still liked it either way! Tell me what you think
